Chevrolet Camaro ZL1
Coupe |
That the ZL1 is the best Camaro ever is perhaps not a huge surprise. That it’s a damned fine all-around GT car is a little more shocking. With the ZL1, General Motors has made the Camaro into a true GT car—daily driver, long-range missile, and track-day special all in one.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class AMG

Next to Mercedes’ previous E63, the handling is much improved. The engine, already one of our favorites, is more responsive, thanks to the transmission.

Our time in the revised CTS served as a reminder that General Motors can build a car that looks and drives as well as any European-designed sports sedan. It remains one of the best American cars on the market.

It’s no coincidence that the BMW X6 M’s 555-hp output bests that of the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S by five ponies. And it undercuts the top Cayenne’s price by $34,690.

So far, all the pieces we’ve seen—technology, performance, price—suggest that the Sonata Hybrid will be a first-rate effort. Just what we expect from Hyundai.

Mercedes-Benz GL-Class BlueTEC
SUV/Truck |
The BlueTec is our pick of the GL range. Its base price of $61,825 undercuts the GL450 by $1000 and the GL550 by a whopping $23,500. What’s more, while we wouldn’t call the diesel stingy, it crushes the gas-burners on fuel economy,.

Although the Mazda 5 isn’t the Miata of minivans—nothing really is—it is a reminder that family hauling doesn’t mean you have to give up on fun driving.

We drove the European version of the Ford Fiesta, and our impression is that it has what it takes to be a hit. Let’s hope the American version is as good.

Mazda 2

We stand behind our conviction that The Mazda 2 represents a good value. Besides, its lively handling makes it among the most rewarding to drive in its segment, even though it loses in cargo versatility to the Rube Goldbergian Fit.

Nissan Leaf

It has limitation but the Leaf trumps every other car on the market in one way: enough green smugness to flip the bird to every Prius driver on the road. That’s worth a little sacrifice.

Mercedes-Benz R-Class
Wagon |
Against luxury 7-passenger SUV-like crossovers, the R-class looks good on paper with plenty of interior space. But even with the improved styling, the R-class looks dowdy to minivan-fearing Americans.
