If you want a big luxo-car, the 2011 BMW 740i is a good deal and has all the motor you’ll ever need. Adding it up, there is a $7350 difference between the 6 cylinder 740i and V-8-powered 750i.

The 2012 BMW 7-Series has managed to age gracefully and we’d still call the big sedan one of the best that BMW has ever produced.

While I was impressed with the standard 750i, the 750Li’s added length and weight sapped any excitement from the driving experience. Luckily, backseat passengers are cocooned in a level of automotive opulence you don’t routinely find for less than six-figures.

The twin-turbo straight six in the 2011 740i and long-wheelbase 740Li is a big-league engine that’s clearly worthy of BMW’s top sedan, what with its 315 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. It is perhaps the smartest buy in BMW’s current lineup.

Despite the smaller engine, the BMW 740i is quick enough for most purposes, getting to 60 miles per hour in 5.8 seconds while 17 miles per gallon city/25 mpg highway. Virtue is not the only reward you get for choosing the 740. Its sticker price is $10,000 less than the 750i.

One thing 7 Series owners all have in common is the desire for pampered luxury and a checkbook to satisfy those desires. And if there is one thing this big Bimmer is does well, it’s luxury.

BMW may have built its reputation on excellent driving characteristics, but the 2011 740i shows that the company is equally good at cabin tech. Performance tech shines with the direct-injection, twin-turbo engine. The suspension and handling are also a tour de force.
